The Call to Surrender

“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.” – Luke 9:23 (NIV)

There is a quiet misunderstanding many of us carry into our walk with Jesus: the idea that faith is simply an addition to the life we already have. We picture discipleship as fitting Jesus into the margins of a schedule already full – a Sunday service here, a prayer before meals there, a verse read before bed. We assume He is meant to complement the life we’ve built, not replace it.

But Jesus never offered Himself as an addition. He offered Himself as an exchange.

“Deny themselves… take up their cross… follow me.” These are not the words of someone asking to be included. They are the words of someone giving a command to be followed — completely, daily, without reservation. The cross was never a symbol of enhancement. It was a symbol of death. To take it up is to lay something down: our agendas, our comfort, and our need to control the outcome of our own story.

Notice the word Jesus chooses – daily. This is not a one-time transaction, a decision made once at an altar and then filed away. Surrender is not a moment; it is a rhythm. Every morning offers a fresh invitation to let go of our grip on the day’s plans and open our hands to His. Every morning also offers a fresh temptation to hold on tighter – to our comfort, our timeline, our version of what a good life looks like.

The truth is, we don’t drift into surrender. We choose it, again and again, often in the small and unremarkable moments before we ever face the large ones. The daily denial of small preferences prepares us for the larger moments when obedience costs more. Discipleship is forged in these repeated actions.

So the real question is not whether we love Jesus. It’s whether we’ve truly exchanged our life for His – or simply invited Him to ride along in a life still steered by our own hands.

Prayer

Lord, give me the courage to lay down my plans today so I can fully pick up Yours. Where I have added You to my life, teach me instead to exchange it for Yours. Make my surrender not a single moment, but a daily rhythm – a willing denial of self that makes room for Your will to lead. I trust that what I release into Your hands is never lost, only transformed. This I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.
